We have received a lot of email about the rumors of a sequel to Bad Santa, the 2003 movie about a conman who poses as Santa as a front for his crimes. Billy Bob Thornton famously portrays Santa in various compromising positions that enraged Santa and Christmas lovers when the movie was released. Called a “classic Christmas comedy” by some the controversial film has been rumored for four years now to have a sequel in the works with Thornton back in the lead role.
Media reports in May of this year (2013) indicated that Entourage creator Doug Ellin had signed up to rewrite an existing Bad Santa 2 script and possibly direct as well. At the time, Thornton was said to be targeting a shoot this autumn (2013).
Since then, there has been no further news on the project, but Thornton insisted he is still keen in a new interview with Collider:
“We all want it to happen,” he said. “It’s all logistics. That’s this business crap, with the rights here, and a person who thinks this, and this person wanting that kind of script. It’s just that stuff. They’re still working on it.”
Since reading that news online we have been contacted by several individuals and one parents’ group asking what could be done to discourage the project.
We will continue to monitor the development of this project. Given the sad state of Hollywood and the lack of originality in current productions we have no reason to believe that this sequel will not be made.
